To reface or replace?
A frequently asked question is should I replace or reface my cabinets. Refacing makes more sense than new cabinets if you are looking to update your cabinets from a visual standpoint. In most cases it is less costly than new cabinets and requires much less time and mess than ripping out your old cabinets and starting over. The main reason cabinet refacing is less costly than new cabinets is that you are reusing your existing cabinet or as we call it the cabinet shell. When you reface cabinets you remove the old cabinet doors, drawer fronts, hinges & trim work leaving the old cabinet or shell in place. Once this step is completed a veneer made from real wood or synthetic laminates is used to cover over the exterior of your old shell. Once this step is completed the next step is to apply new trim and then install new doors & drawer fronts along with new hardware such the hinges, knobs or pulls. In most cases it is a good idea to make an upgrade and replace your old drawer boxes. This in a nutshell is a basic description of cabinet refacing. Refacing your cabinets may be a good choice if you are happy with your existing layout and looking to just improve the look of your kitchen. Cabinet refacing may not be a good investment if the function of your cabinets is your primary problem. Cabinet refacing alone will obviously not solve this problem. Typically when changes are made to your existing cabinets to improve the function pryor to the refacing process the cost of the combined upgrade typically nears the cost of new custom cabinets. New custom cabinets would be a better investment in this situation and give you many more options on the total layout of your kitchen.
